Mayor's Department of Transportation allowed to fall into dysfunction
What Happened
The Mayor's Department of Transportation and Infrastructure (DOTI), led by Amy Ford, has fallen into disarray amid lack of leadership from the administration and abysmal leadership from Director Ford.
DOTI has seen a high turnover of employees. According to the Denver Post
"five positions, or about 10% of the top leaders, have turned over in the past six months. With 50 resignations, the department overall has also lost more employees to voluntary departures than any other in the city since a round of city layoffs ordered in August by Mayor Mike Johnston."
This is not a sign of a functioning department or effective leadership. The Denver Post decided to allow their source to be anonymous because Director Ford had reached out to the ex-employee's family in an attempt to contact the employee. Again, not a positive move that a real director would find acceptable.
What Should Have Been Done
The DOTI director reaching out to family members to obtain the Post's source's contact information is bad enough. However the real story may be in the lack of leadership from the Mayor's office and the cultural rot at the core of DOTI creating an environment that drives turnover and discontent.
Director Ford is not an effective leader and has shown over and over her inability to positively lead the department. It's time for her to go.
