Mayor goes against council vote, extends Flock contract

What Happened

On May 5th Denver City Council voted to not renew the Flock contract. In August the mayor signed a new contract despite council's vote. This time the contract had been amended to be less than $500,000, the amount that would require another council vote.

Mayor Johnston also claimed that the system had not been used to identify any migrants. His claim was found to not be factual by 9News.

October 22nd at a town hall a large crowd gathered to oppose the technology.

Concern was later raised because the contract had not been signed by the city auditor. Something that is required by municipal code.

What Should Have Been Done

Other cities have faced similar fears and pushback against Flock camera installations. Many have decided to turn off the systems. Denver should have followed suite and listened to citizens and council.

Denver does not want the Flock system spying on them.
