STK Steakhouse gets the bike lane modified for their valet after repeatedly blocking the bike lane
What Happened
As part of the bike lane infrastructure removal along Blake and Market DOTI removed part of the protected bike lane in front of STK Steakhouse in order to give private vehicles more space. Historically STK's valets had been illegally using the bike lane for parking and did not follow their own permit from the city.
Individual valets were antagonistic and ignored city code forcing riders out into the street. They often blocked the bus lane as well forcing riders even further out.
In a continuation of a pattern, the Johnston administration sided with a multi-million dollar publicly traded company (The ONE Group owns STK). Riders cried foul that their safety was up for sale again.
What Should Have Been Done
The original valet permit was never really enforced. From the start a private business was allowed to abuse public space. The city should have enforced its own rules and strongly stuck to its policies of safety over convenience.
Continuing to side with moneyed interests only aids in destroying public trust.
